How Fabric Sample Matching Works with a China Fabric Supplier
Jun 3, 2026iFondo Fabric Guide

Fabric sample matching is a practical sourcing process. The goal is not only to find something similar, but to understand which fabric option can work for the buyer's garment, price range, timing and quality expectation.
Step 1: Review the Swatch or Garment
The supplier first checks visible and physical characteristics.
- Fabric structure: woven, knitted, rib, poplin, twill, corduroy, voile or other construction.
- Surface appearance: plain dyed, printed, jacquard, blackout, sheer or textured.
- Handfeel: soft, crisp, smooth, heavy, light, drapey or elastic.
- Possible composition and usage direction.
Step 2: Compare Ready Fabric Options
Ready fabric options can shorten development time when speed matters.
- Check whether a similar fabric exists in current supplier or mill options.
- Compare weight, width, color range and handfeel.
- Review whether the fabric is suitable for the target garment.
- Confirm whether the ready option is stable enough for the planned order.
Step 3: Discuss Custom Development
If no ready fabric is suitable, custom development may be considered.
- Custom color may be enough for some projects.
- Custom structure, composition or weight usually needs more time.
- The buyer should confirm sample expectations before bulk quotation.
- Development risk is lower when the target specification is clear.
Step 4: Confirm Before Bulk
Before bulk order, the buyer should approve the selected sample carefully.
- Check color under suitable lighting.
- Review handfeel and stretch.
- Confirm weight, width and application.
- Keep an approved sample for future reference.
